powerpoint karaoke
Posted: June 12th, 2006 | Author: alicetiara | Filed under: social networking |One of my colleagues at the conference asked me if I’d ever done Powerpoint Karaoke. I said I’d never heard of it, and he was incredulous: apparently it’s a big bar game in Germany. (He thought they’d ganked it from the US, but I was pretty sure I’d have heard of it if so).
Anyway, I was right, it’s definitely a German invention. It basically involves downloading random ppts from the web, the more obscure the better (I would think the RFID tag/mark of the beast deck would be a good starter). Participants have to improvise a presentation along with the PPT, having no idea, of course, what slide is to come next. I have a feeling I’d be good at this game, but it doesn’t seem to have caught on in this country, even here in the ultranerdy SF bay area. Flickr brings up almost exclusively German pix.
Any suggestions? Or does anyone in the Bay Area want to help me put on such an incredibly dorky event?

In fact, Powerpoint Karaoke was invented by Holm Friebe (Zentrale Intelligenz Agentur) and held for the very first time in Berlin on January 25th, 2006 (most of the flickr pictures you mention were taken on that day). There have been maybe ten Powerpoint Karaoke evenings since, some hosted by ZIA, some by copycats, but right now Powerpoint Karaoke is far from being “a big bar game in Germany”. Still, it might yet happen!
Wow, thanks for the info! Everything I know about PPT karaoke I learned from one guy at this conference, so his impression may have been exaggerated :) But I’m glad to find the origins, because I’m super interested in doing a similar event in the Bay Area.
Just for your information.
I have created a Powerpoint Karaoke App using the http://www.slideshare.net API.
You can see it at: http://www.slidesharetoys.com/karaoke
Cheers!
