del.icio.us update

Corrections:

The site’s down due to “hiccups” caused by a “power outage.” We’ll see. 24h downtime still driving me crazy.

It’s funny to read the del.icio.us: comments on the delicious blog from people suffering deprivation:

“It’s getting late, I have six sites that I need to bookmark and I don’t want to leave the computer on the entire night. What to do, what to do? No worries my del.icio.us friends, I’m staying up all night ’til the service is up and running.”

“I recently backed up my del.icio.us bookmarks and imported them to my web 2.0 on yahoo. They both work good, and I have most of my bookmarks there. Also, to keep your open bookmarks, just open up an email and send it to yourself with your links.”

How quickly we forget about the concept of browser bookmarks! Theoryette: del.icio.us was super quick to catch on b/c browser bookmarking doesn’t work, is clunky, nobody really likes it, isn’t useful, etc. Am I right? Is anyone attached to browser bookmarking? Does anyone miss it? Did anyone use it?

:) Before the days of del.icio.us, wordpress, and the like, I used to post a ginormous bookmark.htm file as a link from my blog with a little scripting that would pull out random chunks and post them. Now I keep a tmp folder in there as a way to pass the time without del.icio.us.

I use both, but I really only bookmark(let) things that I visit many times a day day (gmail, lj friends, bloglines a few sites that don’t have rss), while I use del.icio.us for things I want to read later, information that might be useful in the future, reminders of things to download. I used bookmarks a lot more before I learned the joys of bloglines and rss. (i’m not exactly an early adopter…). I now use folders in firefox bookmarks toolbar called Daily, Sometimes, Torrents, Games, Health for things not suitable for bloglines.

Doing short-term research – I create a bookmark folder in firefox toolbar and throw everything in there until I figure out what’s useful and/or finish the research. Then I delete it. I’ll only use del.icio.us for the good stuff, or stuff I find while using a different computer. Plus, I don’t put journal article pdf’s on del.icio.us cuz of access proxy and the like.

Well, I preface this statement by saying – I am a total dork.

But I use browser bookmarks. In fact, I *only* use browser bookmarks. This may change soon as I keep forgetting to keep up with my non-LiveJournal blogs. (Honestly, if I hadn’t added your RSS to my friends page, I’d never read this. I am sad.)

There’s a lot of haters on the del.icio.us blog.

Yup, old Commodore. That’s me c. 1979 (at the tender age of three). Little did I know I would be spending the next 20 something years engaged in the same pursuit.
