Marwick (alicetiara), a Fellow at Data & Society where she leads the Media Manipulation project, and (as of 2017) Assistant Professor at UNC Chapel Hill in the Department of Communication. She is formerly Director of the McGannon Center for Communication Research at Fordham University. Her first book, Status Update: Celebrity and Attention in Social Media (Yale University Press 2013), examines how people use social media to boost social status, focusing on life-streaming, micro-celebrity, and self-branding. This blog focuses on academic work, technology, pop culture, communication, and media studies. She received her PhD from the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU in 2010, lives in NYC, and likes small dogs, thrift stores, and nail art.
